Counselling Perspectives

Frequently Asked Questions

How much will counselling cost?

My fee per session is £50 and I also keep some slots for clients with low incomes for whom I charge less.

How many sessions will I need?

The initial assessment is important, and during that I may suggest an initial fixed number of six sessions, or open-ended counselling, depending on the nature of the issues.

Is everything I say really fully confidential?

Sessions take place in my private consulting room. The identity of clients as well as the content of sessions is fully confidential. According to my code of ethics, the only reason for breaking confidentiality is when a client informs me that there is a risk that they could harm themselves or another person. In that event I would need to consult with a colleague and inform the client's GP of my concerns.

Why would counselling help more than talking to my best friend?

It's great to talk to your friends and family. Sadly, not everyone has that kind of support network. If they do have, unfortunately those people may also be part of the problem. And their time for listening may be very limited, and of course they can't wait to tell you their own problems, especially if you are a good listener! A professional counsellor looks in from outside your problem situation, is trained and experienced in active listening, using their expert knowledge to think through the issues and solutions.
